What Are Military and Veteran Discounts?
Do you really save when you use military and veteran discounts?
The sacrifice of today’s military is one that cannot be taken lightly, especially considering that every military member in today’s Armed Forces is a volunteer who chose to serve the country. Military and veteran discounts are a great way to give back to those who may give the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Today’s Armed Forces are made up of five branches which include the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy. In addition, there are three general categories of military members, including active duty, reserve and guard forces as well as veterans. Although all branches of the military and categories of members are eligible for veteran and military discounts, it is helpful to understand what duties each branch performs and what each category of military member means.

Discounts For Air Force Active Duty And Veterans
The United States Air Force is the aerial and space warfare service branch of the Armed Forces. It was initially created as part of the United States Army in 1907 but became a separate branch in 1947. The mission of the Air Force is to provide aviation forces for combat. It is responsible for the preparation of the air forces necessary in the prosecution of war in accordance with integrated joint mobilization. Air Force bases are located throughout the United States, Europe and Asia as well as other areas around the world. There are currently over 327,000 active duty members of the Air Force and over 263,000 of those members are enlisted. The average of the enlisted force is 28 ad 46 percent of those enlisted are under the age of 26. Each member of the Air Force could benefit from military discount programs.
Discounts For Army Active Duty And Veterans
The United States Army is the land branch of the Armed Forces, established in 1775 as the Continental Army. It is the oldest branch of the military, formed initially to fight the American Revolution. The mission of the Army is to preserve peace and security as well as to provide defense of the United States, its commonwealths and any area occupied by the United States. Today, there are more than 179,000 soldiers in more than 140 countries, all of whom could benefit from military discounts. This includes more than 30,000 soldiers supporting operations in the Middle East. The average age of an Army soldier is 29.
Discounts For Coast Guard Active Duty And Veterans
The United States Coast Guard enforces maritime law and defends the coastlines of the country. The Coast Guard is unique in that it has jurisdiction in both domestic and national waters. This branch of the military traces its roots to a small fleet operated by the United States Treasury in the 1790s which enforced tariffs, income that was critical to the success of the new nation. Then-Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton lobbied Congress to fund ten cutters which were approved on August 4, 1790. Before the establishment of the Navy, the Coast Guard also combatted piracy, rescued distressed mariners, ferried government officials and sometimes carried mail. There are currently almost 41,000 active members of the Coast Guard and 7,000 in reserve forces.
Discounts For Marine Corps Active Duty And Veterans
Another branch of the military that benefits from discounts for veterans and active duty members is the United States Marine Corps. The Corps is a component of the United States Navy, established in 1775. It began as a service branch of infantry troops who could fight both on land and at sea. During World War II, the Marine Corps took the lead in the Pacific. Initially, members of the Marine Corps were responsible for the security of the ship and its crew, defending the officers on the ship from mutiny. For that reason, their quarters were strategically placed on ships between the officers’ quarters and the rest of the vessel. Today, there are more than 186,000 active duty Marine Corps members and 38,500 in reserves.
Discounts For Navy Active Duty And Veterans
The United States Navy is the naval warfare branch of the military and was established as the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War. Once the war ended, the Navy was disbanded as a separate entity. However, Barbary pirates caused ships to lose a significant amount of goods which led the government to fund six heavy frigates, the first ships of what would become today’s Navy in 1794. The Navy was instrumental in the North’s triumph over the South during the Civil War by blockading rivers and in World War II while battling in Japan. Today, there are more than 329,000 active duty members of the Navy and more than 100,000 in reserves.
Military Member Categories
There are three categories of military membership, including active duty, reserves and veterans. Active duty are full-time military members who may live on a military base and may be deployed at any time. Reserve and members of the National Guard are part-time members of the military and often have employment that is outside the military. They may also be deployed at any time should the need arise. Even though they are part-time, they are still eligible for many military discount programs. Veterans are anyone who has served in the Armed Forces but has since left service or retired. They must have received a discharge that was not dishonorable in order to qualify for benefits. Many of those who have retired or left service are eligible for veteran discount programs as well.
